Recent Complaints
Always Insist on Meter
By law, every auto-rickshaw in Bangalore must have a working meter. If the driver refuses to use the meter, you have the right to report them. Don't negotiate - it's your right!
Fine for Refusing Meter: &rupee;500
Under Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rules, an auto driver who refuses to ply by meter can be fined &rupee;500. You can report such incidents to the traffic police.
Photo the Auto Number Before Riding
Take a quick photo of the auto number plate before boarding. This helps if you need to file a complaint later. Share the photo with a friend for safety.
Night Fare: 10 PM, Not Sunset
Night surcharge of 50% is only applicable between 10 PM and 5 AM. If a driver charges night fare before 10 PM, that's an overcharge. Check the time!
No Extra for One-Way Trips
The one-way return charge (1.5x fare) has been abolished since 2024. Drivers cannot charge extra saying "I won't get a return fare." This is now illegal!
Carry Exact Change
Many drivers claim they don't have change to round up the fare. Carry small denominations (&rupee;10, &rupee;20, &rupee;50 notes) or use UPI payment to pay the exact meter fare.
Your Rights
Right to Metered Fare
Under Section 66 of the Motor Vehicles Act, all auto-rickshaws must ply by meter. Refusing to do so is a punishable offence.
Right to Refuse Extra Charges
Drivers cannot demand tips, return fare, or any charge not prescribed by the transport authority. You only need to pay the metered fare plus applicable surcharges.
Right to a Receipt
You can ask for a receipt from the driver. Electronic meters are mandated to provide printed receipts.
